F*** Grawlix!

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

First of all, I decided to post cool stuff to this here blog, in addition to just the comics.  So much for the anonymous mysterious man of mystery vibe, I guess.

You know when a comic is trying to curse without cursing, and they type something like "@$%^!" ? It's called grawlix, and it was apparently invented by Mort "Beetle Bailey" Walker. Check out more here.

From the makers of Helvetica (The film, not the typeface)

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Here at Rosscott, Inc. (and The System) we are big fans of design.  That being said, expect this to be the first of many posts on cool design topics.  I will keep it to ones that are accessible to all (at least, I think so).

Comes Objectified!  I loved Helvetica, and am looking forward to this.

"Objectified is a feature-length independent documentary about industrial design. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. It’s about our relationship to mass-produced objects and, by extension, the people who design them.

Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?"

Obama’s Branding

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

This is NOT meant as a political post. However, the designer in me can't let this one go.  Obama has created a consistent brand unlike anything seen before, and Michael Beirut has written a great piece about it.

Is Obama's stuff on the level with the best commercial brand design?
I think it's just as good or better. I have sophisticated clients who pay me and other people well to try to keep them on the straight and narrow, and they have trouble getting everything set in the same typeface. And he seems to be able to do it in Cleveland and Cincinnati and Houston and San Antonio. Every time you look, all those signs are perfect. Graphic designers like me don't understand how it's happening. It's unprecedented and inconceivable to us. The people in the know are flabbergasted.

Like him or not, you gotta appreciate the brand consistency and his ability to market a message.  Check out the article for more.
