The System 385: Why I Bike

Why do you bike?

UPDATE: I’ve had some early feedback from people wanting this on a shirt. Are you one of them? If I get 10 people committing to it, I’ll put it up for preorder.

UPDATE UPDATE: It’s gonna be a shirt. All of you who commented, prepare those wallets!

UPDATE x3: How’s this look? Seriously, I want your opinion. If you’re not going to buy it, I’m going to change it. I’m reworking that. Stay tuned to the site, and the final shirt will be posted on the online store, HilariAwesome.com. Probably going to stay with that shirt color palette, just change up the design. If you’re looking for a cool biking shirt, check out the Bike Sniper shirt already in the store.

mostly because it's cheaper than the metro, faster than walking, and easier/cheaper than finding a place to park my car

  2. humantorch

I bike because I don't own a car, and ever since I started cycling consistently a few years ago my health and overall fitness has improved dramatically. Also, what greg said.

    Plus, chicks dig cyclists.

Put me down for a shirt, mos'definitely.

  3. Hjalti

    Make it several shirts…

I don't scuba to think, I don't walk to think, I don't xxx to think…. with different dudes… That would be sooo awesome! :)

  4. Rossmom

Thinking at all–why? Of course try not thinking of elephants in the room or the last song you heard on the iPod (I would have said radio but I question whether any of you know what that is anymore.)

Of course if you can to meditate technically you won't think. Kudos to anyone who can do that!

I bike to work because it seems like a reasonable vehicle to transport myself and a bag with 5-10 pounds of stuff. I find it pretty crazy that the standard vehicle people use to move themselves and a few things has to weigh 3500 pounds.

I also ride for fun. I like long weekend rides where I can just go 100 miles and enjoy the day. I also like challenging fast rides on hills that push my limits and make me stronger.

If I had the fans to justify, I'd do tons. But considering audience size and the fact I need to print a minimum of 12 shirts at a time…

  7. jbadger

I bike because driving in the city is boring. Not that I don't enjoy sports cars and curvy roads, just for commuting purposes a vehicle where it feels like everyone else is trying to kill you is way more interesting.

Put me down for a shirt.

I seem to live at the second highest point in vancouver, so it's just about downhill going nearly everywhere but home
I absolutely agree with you, though. a car or bus is pretty passive compared to a bike, you have to focus on the road so as not to drift into the side of a bus or something like that
Plus it's free!, bus passes for a year would cost me $600 after taxes, drving would cost that every few months.

    Shirt me!

  9. jj!

you could say i bike everywhere because i don't own a car. but one of the reasons i sold my car was because i realized i *could* bike everywhere and thereby free myself from being contributing to the destruction of the planet.

i know it makes me sound like a dick, but fuck it, i'll go there: if you drive a car when you could ride a bicycle, then the bp oil spill is partly your fault.

  10. vmaaxt

I would get a shirt if it was of high quality. Also if it looked good.

  11. rosscott

I can garuantee the quality. I can only hope on the design.

  12. Konsie

    I bike to relax and have fun… But I don't have bike…. I had… And want another… *whip*…

If it were viable to bike in this part of SoMD, believe me, I would. I am walking to work in the heat and a million percent humidity until a certain someone is done for the summer and I have the car. Biking means no car payments, no insurance payments, no public transportation fees, and quicker transportation than on foot. Unfortunately, right around here, it also means no shoulder to swerve to, a semi-main road that sees just enough traffic to be a bit dangerous, and probably getting hit by idiot drivers whooshing down said road doing twenty over, drivers who also love to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane when driving past me. I’m walking at least a foot and a half away from you, dummy. Why the hell do you need to swerve over like that along a curvy road, when you can’t see thirty feet in front of you??

But anyway. My twenty-minute trek to work is definitely a space where I let my mind wander freely. It’s nice for the soul and the creativity to allow yourself a time and place for that. I have the most interesting inner conversations with myself at free-thought times like that. Some of my best writing comes from jotting down stuff right after one of those sessions.

  14. fool

    i'd buy a shirt

  15. mike

i will definitely get this on a t-shirt if you choose to print a few

  16. fred

    shirt. buy. I.

  17. chipper

    *SNORT*

Your comment made me laugh out loud not once but twice on the reread.

  18. chipper

I would buy but sadly cannot.

on an unrelated note, every time I see the rep bubble with #p, I think, "why does roscott have 74 pence?"

  19. Auto Immune » Cyclelicious

[...] System: Why I Bike. “I don’t bike to think.” He might put that on a [...]

  20. T.J.

    I'm down.

  21. Alex

    I would buy this shirt.

  22. Alex

Also, I bike because it's faster than walking and cheaper than driving!

  23. anticapped

    Want the shirt.

  24. Boredo

Its easy once you stop all thinking once, I got to the point that I don't even think when talking to others….Then again I'm pretty empty-headed. :D

  25. mike

I don’t ride for the good of the planet. I ride for the good of me.

  26. dede

I bike because it's a good way to lay of steam, cool down plus it's a good exercise and because it's a good way to forget about everything

  27. akaKathy

I likey and would most definitely be interested in a shirt (small please).

  28. Leon

ye i think a shirt would be good and i bike because where i live theres many passages too small for cars so i can usually get places faster on a bike anyway. also i love mountain biking

  29. Michelle

I bike not to think about split infinitives that make me cry ;) [Totally agree though ;) ]

  30. Ryan

Looks like you’ve got your ten already, but I’m still in for one if you get some made.

  31. rosscott

    It's going up tonight!

  32. Rossmom

I don't think most of us "think" when we talk to others. Probably better that way. Otherwise we would have to pay attention to what people tell us and that would really mess things up!

  33. Rossmom

Have you ever watched a race=walker? Probably can't catch a biker at full speed, but they could give a biker a "walk" for their money!

  34. Boredo

Oh you do think, just not about the conversation.

  35. Professr

I would italicize, underline, or bold the "not" in "I bike to not think". Just my two cents…

  36. Tim

I'd buy it! Where do you order (if it won't be in the store section)

  37. Aric

Nice design, what about just putting the comic on a shirt in wrap-around design… first panel on the front around side to last panel on the back. I’d buy that too.

  38. rosscott

Still working on it. Convention prep has gotten thoroughly in the way. Soon!

  39. wasabi

This is my exact mindset with gaming.
    I don't game to think.
    I game to not think.

e.g I don't like RTS ( Real time strategy ). Too much thinking there.
I just want a game that sucks me in and makes me forget about all my problems, so I can focus on my single virtual problem, such as how to get on the other side of this wall that is chest high as I can not jump over it.

    I love gaming.

  40. Scorch

Definitly to not think, and also to get to school sometimes
    and for the adrenaline

  41. bob

    I bike to forget..

  42. Jim

I bike to think.. And listen to music.

  43. Stephen

I cycle because I can’t always run to and from work…..or the shops

  44. Buzzardking

Gatesunder — Yeah, me too. 16 miles a day carrying food and work clothes to a physically demanding job, with one nemesis hill on the way. I'm in great shape AND I am tired and sore all the time. But it's still better than wasting time riding buses — or shelling out money for a car to own me.

Nice shirt, but I actually do my best thinking on the bike, especially when I let my mind wander.

  45. Matt

Just ran across your comic, and I would totally get this shirt, but I share Michelle's grievance: the split infinitive makes me cry a little. Keep up the biking humor!
