The System 351: The Cupcake Sandwich
This is my gift to the world. A way of fully indulging in the joys of the cupcake without any of the drawbacks. A way that balances every bite with frosting, cake, and the joy of knowing you have truly proven yourself to be an enlightened and practical individual. I know what you’re thinking, there must be some drawbacks! Here are some common questions about THE CUPCAKE SANDWICH:
Won’t the frosting get everywhere?
While some frosting does leak out the sides at times, this is a perfect opportunity to have a bit of frosting by itself without having to have globs of it all at once. Don’t consider this a drawback, but an opportunity.
How is this any shorter than it was before? Won’t getting it in your mouth still be a problem? And your math sucks, cupcakes are not 2x the height of my mouth.
First of all, you are probably the same detractors that found flaws in the Full Gadget Ratio. Nertz to you. Second, no this will not be a problem. The cakey bottom, once placed on top, creates a “safe zone” for your hands with which you can compress the size of the cupcake at will, without getting your hands covered in frosting. As for the height of the cupcake vs mouth, it may not be perfect but sometimes the best things in life aren’t.
How have I never thought of this before?
This is why I’m an internet humorist and you’re a reader. We all have our roles to play.
UPDATE: Systemic Brownpau sends word that others have come up with the same idea…
Time for a contest, Systemics!
You have ONE WEEK (until the end of 4/1/2010 EST) to send me a photo of you and your friends enjoying a CUPCAKE SANDWICH. These must be emailed to systemcomic at gmail. Points will be given based on:
- Amazingness of the cupcake
- Composition of the photo
- Number of people eating CUPCAKE SANDWICHES in the photo
- Originality
What’s on the line?
- A print of the CUPCAKE SANDWICH comic you see above from HilariAwesome.com
- A shirt of your choosing from HilariAwesome.com, including the fresh new “Beards Turn Laziness Into Awesomeness” shirt (which is still on preorder sale through tomorrow!)
- A post on the site all about you and your CUPCAKE SANDWICH experience

There is a word for this. And that word is FUCKING GENIUS!
March 25th, 2010 at 7:01 pm
I love cupcakes! Without frosting that is. Have you ever made frosting? All it is is like 2 sticks of butter and 4 cups of confectioners sugar….
How about you have my frosting, i cut a cupcake in half and eat a yummy 2-slab cupcake sammy?
March 25th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
I think I saw Giada do this on the Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate" once.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
They don't have to adopt anything! You just have to SHOW THEM THE WAY.

No, wait. It was Sandra Lee – Best Thing I Ever Ate: With My Hands.

I saw someone eat a cupcake this way over a year ago, and it is now the only way I eat cupcakes.
March 25th, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Sometimes it's an idea, and other times it's a MOVEMENT.

Nice! Although really, I'll eat cupcakes most any way. As for the bottom being boring, when you're at SXSW next year, drop by Hey Cupcake! on South Congress Avenue, where they'll inject the bottom of your cupcake with cream filling to order – that livens things up.

Bloody Brilliant!!!
I sense that a Nobel may be coming your way…

I, being an icing aficionado, fully approve. Although, being addicted to icing, I would still put some on the top. (I mean if you are going to go for icing, go all out!)
As for being too big to fit in your mouth? Nothing this good is too big to fit!
Now as for the ingredients in icing, yes, there is buttercream, also ganache, mousse (definitely not something I would go for, it doesn't have any heft), fondant, and others but the absolute best, not to be "topped" by any other type–fudge!
Now, I think I will go and make a double-decker cupcake sandwich w/icing in the middle and on top (I don't fool around when it comes to cake and especially icing!) To be perfectly honest, I might just forgo the cupcake and just eat the icing. (It is after all, the best part!)
(It goes along w/why spoil hot fudge by putting it on ice cream.)

Like most things in life it's better when you do it yourself.

Cutting the cupcake is just too much work. Instead, take two cupcakes, invert one atop the other, and enjoy. You may want to evolve a bigger mouth to go with your bigger gut.

I started doing this a few years ago as a result of living near this place in Chicago http://www.swirlzcupcakes.com/ . Nice to see it documented somewhere though.

Best Icing/frosting for cupcakes:
bag of confectioners sugar
baileys irish cream
slowly add the irish cream until the frosting is thick, but still thin enough that you can easily dip cupcakes into it. That way you can break off pieces & dip it in the baileys frosting:P (baileys cupcake shooters ftw)

It's the butter and sugar that make the frosting so great! To each their own though. How about a jelly filled cupcake, no frosting necessary!
July 5th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
I used to do this with regular old sheet cake when I was packing my school lunches as a tiny tot. Not only is it more delicious, it minimizes the amount of frosting left on whatever container you're using to transport your food.v
