Some Web Design Wisdom

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Outside of doing this comic, I actually have two other jobs.  First is a day job as a graphic designer (mostly web, as I’m sure you guessed).  The other is as a professor at a local university.  Recently I was asked to give some web design tips to one of the other teachers to help get students started.  Here’s a few of them:

1. Web designing is as much about function as it is about form. Make sure text is readable, links are clear, buttons look like buttons, and you can tell where you are.

2. The site should look branded to the concept in every way possible. Even without the logo, you should know which site you’re on.

4. Web design isn’t print design. People need information and guidance as much as they need a cool graphic.

Nothing rocket science but a pretty good list of what students need to hear to start IMHO.  The rest can be read HERE.

Mad Men Was Awesome Yesterday

I haven’t put a forum on the site (do you think I should? would you use it?) so I don’t have a great place to put this except in the post.  As you must know by now, I’m a huge fan of Mad Men and have posted about it as much as I can in the past. In fact I have a small but happy tradition of watching it with my Internet Bro Marty via gChat every Sunday night.

All of this to say that this latest episode “The Gypsy and the Hobo” blew my mind. BLEW. MY. MIND. What a great episode.  So since I have a website and I can do what I want with it, I’m opening up the comments on this post to be a Mad Men discussion thread on the latest episode. Click on the link for my thoughts, keeping in mind they will be spoilers-a-plenty.

So if you saw the episode and/or love the show, post your thoughts on it below.
