The System 281: Singletasking

Do you ever singletask anymore?

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who followed Leo Laporte here! If you’re new to the comic, check out the first comic. Or maybe the other comics with rules and terms, all along similar lines. Or the comic archive. Oh, and like Leo, I’m also on Twitter.

    Who surfs the internet at work…. really?

    Maybe I should get back to work. T.T;

    Ah, you younguns, back in the time before the Stone Age, we actually did single-task because our only diversions were magazines and newspapers and in the infant stage of cubes, our phone conversations could all be overheard. So, we really couldn't look productive surreptiously.

    The only diversions we had were going to the cafeteria (if your office was lucky enough to have one) to grab coffee (no, we couldn't stay there) or to appear as if we had an intestinal problem and spend time in the restrooms. (Yes, even back then guys considered it the "reading room", but there was only so much time women could spend "fixing their makeup".)

    I have to admit though, I don't know that it improved our productivity. I mean, how much time can you really spend on a single task?

    Singletasking? What is this madness?

    It seems like the internet connection here is trying to teach me a lesson by only going out when I actually need it for work. Like I'll be in the middle of a file transfer and *poof!* its out. But reading an entire webcomic archive? No problem!

    Not sure what its trying to teach me, but its something alright.

    I can't singletask when I'm not dicking around on the internet…. I have to have something to distract half my brain so the other half functions at a normal speed…

    this is grand, have been some studies showing, especially with the current youth, their excessive multitasking is both damaging their memory, not to mention each of the tasks they are carrying out is done poorly.

    huh? Humm…That would explain a lot of things…

    Now what am I going to do while my computer does that hour glass thing?

    It's funny 'cause I'm reading this instead of working.

    I singletask all the time… it's just that the single task I'm doing is dicking around on the internet. Ah, the joys of working remotely from home, with the work computer in a separate window!
